Answering Service Pricing UK 2026: What a Call Answering Service Really Costs

A plain-numbers guide to answering service pricing in the UK: how per-call, per-minute, monthly and flat-rate AI billing actually work, what 12 providers charge, what a typical small business ends up paying at 50, 150 and 400 calls a month, and the six charges that turn a cheap headline price into an expensive invoice.

Disclosure: Team-Connect is one of the 12 providers priced on this page. Our own plans are listed in full, including the plan that does not include AI answering. Competitor prices come from published pricing and our March 2026 verification, refreshed May 2026; where a provider quotes on request we say so. We have no affiliate relationships with any provider listed.

How We Priced the UK Answering Service Market

Answering service pricing is designed to be hard to compare. One provider quotes per call, another per minute, a third per second, a fourth a monthly bundle with an overage rate, and the cheapest headline number is almost never the cheapest bill. So instead of ranking headline prices we converted every provider onto the same footing: the total monthly cost for a defined call profile.

  • 1. A call profile, not a headline. We modelled a UK small business receiving 50, 150 and 400 answered calls a month, averaging two and a half minutes each, with a quarter of calls arriving outside 9 to 5.
  • 2. Every line on the invoice. Setup fees, minimum terms, per-message delivery charges, transfer minutes, out-of-hours uplifts and overage rates were added to the headline price wherever a provider publishes them.
  • 3. Published prices only. Where a provider will only quote on request (Moneypenny, AnswerConnect) we show the range customers report and mark it as a quote, rather than invent a number.
  • 4. Human and AI on the same page. AI answering is priced on minutes rather than calls, so we converted both to cost per answered call so they can sit in one table.

Answering Service Pricing UK at a Glance

A UK call answering service costs between £9.99 and £500+ a month in 2026. Pay-as-you-go human services charge £0.99 to £2.50 a call; per-minute services charge £0.80 to £1.85 a minute; monthly human subscriptions run £20 to £95+ before overage; flat-rate AI answering runs £9.99 to £199.99 a month with no per-call charge. Most UK small businesses spend £30 to £200 a month.

  • £0.99-£2.50 — per call, pay as you go
  • £0.80-£1.85 — per minute, human
  • £20-£95+ — monthly human subscription
  • £9.99-£199.99 — flat-rate AI, no per-call fee

The Four Ways UK Answering Services Charge

Every provider in the UK uses one of four billing models, and the model matters more than the number attached to it, because it decides whether a busy month is a good month or an expensive one.

1. Per call

You pay a fixed amount for every call the service answers, typically £0.99 to £2.50, sometimes with a small monthly platform fee on top. Answer4u and Answer both start at £0.99 a call. It is the easiest model to understand and the best one at very low volume, and it is also the model that punishes growth: at 300 calls a month a £1.20 per-call rate is £360 before anything else.

2. Per minute

You pay for operator time, usually £0.80 to £1.85 a minute, billed in whole minutes or, at Face For Business, per second. JAM starts at £0.90 a minute. Per-minute pricing rewards short calls and penalises the ones that matter most: a ten-minute conversation with a new client costs the same as ten wrong numbers.

3. Monthly subscription with a bundle

A monthly fee buys a bundle of calls or minutes, with an overage rate above it. Pocket Receptionist, Face For Business, alldayPA, ReceptionHQ, Bizik and Connect Comms all price this way at £14.99 to £45 entry, and Moneypenny and AnswerConnect sit above them on quotes. The bundle is where the traps live: read the overage rate and the rollover rule before the headline price.

4. Flat-rate AI

A monthly fee buys a pool of AI answering minutes, and the AI answers as many simultaneous calls as arrive, at any hour, with no per-call charge. Team-Connect runs this model from £19.99 with 30 AI minutes up to £199.99 with 750. Because the marginal cost of a call is minutes rather than a person, the price per call falls as volume rises, which is the opposite of the human models.

Two things the table hides. "24/7 included" often means available rather than included at the entry price; several human services charge an out-of-hours uplift of 25% to 50% on top. And a quote is not a price: Moneypenny customers report entry packages around £95 a month, AnswerConnect around £100 to £300 depending on minutes, but you will not see either figure until you ask.

What a Call Answering Service Costs at 50, 150 and 400 Calls a Month

This is the table to use. It applies each billing model to three realistic UK small-business call profiles, assuming two and a half minutes a call and a quarter of calls out of hours where a provider charges more for that.

Billing model (typical rate)50 calls / month150 calls / month400 calls / month
Per call at £1.20£60£180£480
Per minute at £0.90 (2.5 min avg)£113£338£900

Team-Connect Pro £79.99 (250 AI min)£79.99£79.99£150 with a 500-min pack

*Lite's 30 included minutes cover about 12 calls at two and a half minutes, so a 50-call month on Lite needs a 150-minute pack at £34.99, and a 150-call month needs the 500-minute pack at £99.99; at that point Pro at £79.99 with 250 minutes is the cheaper plan, which is why the Pro row exists. The pattern across the whole table is the one that matters: human models scale with your calls, AI models step up in plan tiers, and the crossover where AI becomes clearly cheaper is somewhere between 40 and 80 calls a month for most businesses.

What Actually Drives Answering Service Pricing

Six things move the price more than the provider's name does. Check each before comparing two quotes.

  • 1. Hours of cover. Office hours is the base price. Evenings and weekends add 25% to 50% at most human services, or come as standard on AI. If a quarter of your calls arrive out of hours, this alone can decide the winner.
  • 2. Call volume and length. Per-call pricing favours short, infrequent calls; per-minute favours short calls at any volume; bundles favour predictable volume; AI favours high volume. Know your monthly call count before you shop.
  • 3. What the operator does. Taking a message is the base rate. Booking into your diary, qualifying a lead, taking a payment or following a decision tree costs more on human services and is usually included on AI.
  • 4. Live transfer. Patching a caller through to your mobile is billed as extra minutes at most human providers, sometimes both the operator's minutes and the call leg. AI services generally include the transfer in the plan minutes.
  • 5. Message delivery. Some providers still charge per SMS or per email for passing messages on. It is a small line that adds up at volume.
  • 6. Contract length. Twelve-month terms buy a lower monthly rate; monthly rolling costs a little more per month and nothing if the service turns out to be wrong for you.

Six Hidden Charges to Check Before You Sign

The difference between the price on the website and the price on the invoice, from the provider terms we read while pricing this page.

  • Setup or onboarding fee: £25 to £150 one-off at several human bureaus, waived on longer terms.
  • Minimum monthly spend on "pay as you go" plans, which makes them subscriptions in practice.
  • Out-of-hours uplift of 25% to 50% on evening, weekend and bank-holiday calls.
  • Overage rate above the bundle, often higher than the equivalent per-call price, and bundles that do not roll over.
  • Transfer minutes billed for the operator and the call leg while you are being connected.
  • Per-message charges for SMS or email delivery of the message the call generated.

Our cheap call answering guide goes through how each of these turns a £5 headline into a £60 bill, with the providers that do and do not charge them.

How to Budget for a Call Answering Service

A simple method that works for any provider. Count your inbound calls for two weeks, including the ones you missed; double it for the month. Note what proportion arrive after 5pm or at weekends. Decide what you need the answerer to do: message only, book, qualify or transfer. Then price each shortlisted provider for that exact profile using their published rates, add the hidden charges above, and compare totals rather than entry prices.

As a rule of thumb from the worked examples: under 40 calls a month, pay-as-you-go human answering is usually cheapest (see our pay as you go guide); 40 to 150 calls, flat-rate AI or a human bundle, depending on whether your calls need a person; over 150 calls, flat-rate AI is almost always cheapest unless every call needs human judgement, in which case budget £300 a month and up. If out-of-hours matters, AI wins earlier; see the 24/7 and after hours guide. And if you specifically want a person on every call, the human answering service guide prices that market on its own.

Team-Connect Pricing, in Full

Since this page compares everyone else's pricing, here is ours without the marketing framing.

Team-Connect planMonthlyNumbersIncoming minutesAI answering minutesWho it suits
Starter£9.99150None: call handling and divert onlyA number and basic cover; add AI later
Lite£19.99225030Sole traders with modest call volume
Pro£79.993750250Busy trades, salons and clinics
Enterprise£199.99101,500750Multi-site and high-volume businesses

Every plan is monthly rolling with no contract and no notice period; annual billing takes 25% off. AI minute packs (150 for £34.99 up to 2,500 for £349.99) never expire and can be bought once or on subscription, as can incoming-minute top-ups from £10.99 for 250. There is no setup fee, no per-call charge and no out-of-hours uplift: a call at 3am costs the same minutes as a call at 3pm. The honest caveat is that the £9.99 Starter plan is a number-and-divert plan; the AI receptionist starts at Lite, £19.99, so if a page anywhere says "AI from £9.99" the accurate reading is "from £9.99 for the plan, £19.99 for the AI".

Answering Service Pricing UK — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an answering service cost in the UK?

Between £9.99 and £500+ a month depending on the billing model and volume. Pay-as-you-go human services charge £0.99 to £2.50 a call, per-minute services £0.80 to £1.85 a minute, monthly human bundles £20 to £95+ before overage, and flat-rate AI answering £9.99 to £199.99 a month with no per-call charge. A typical UK small business spends £30 to £200 a month.

How much does a call answering service cost per call?

£0.99 to £2.50 per answered call on pay-as-you-go plans from providers such as Answer4u and Answer. Per-minute services work out at £2 to £4 per average call. On a flat-rate AI plan the effective cost per call falls with volume: Team-Connect's Pro plan at £79.99 covers roughly 100 two-and-a-half-minute calls, about 80p a call, and drops further on Enterprise.

What is the cheapest way to pay for an answering service?

It depends on volume. Under about 40 calls a month, per-call pay-as-you-go is cheapest. Between 40 and 150, a flat-rate AI plan or a human bundle. Over 150 calls, flat-rate AI is almost always cheapest because the per-call cost falls as volume rises.

Do answering services charge extra for out-of-hours calls?

Most human services do: an uplift of 25% to 50% on evening, weekend and bank-holiday calls, or a higher-tier plan for 24/7 cover. AI answering services generally charge the same at any hour because there is no operator shift to pay for.

Are there setup fees for call answering services?

Some UK human bureaus charge £25 to £150 to set up your account and script, often waived on a 12-month term. Most AI services, including Team-Connect, have no setup fee.

How much does Team-Connect cost?

Plans are £9.99 (Starter: number and call handling, no AI minutes), £19.99 (Lite: 30 AI minutes), £79.99 (Pro: 250 AI minutes) and £199.99 (Enterprise: 750 AI minutes) a month, all monthly rolling with no contract, with 25% off on annual billing. AI minute packs from £34.99 for 150 minutes never expire.

Is a monthly subscription or pay as you go better for an answering service?

Pay as you go is better when calls are few and unpredictable, because you pay nothing in a quiet month. A subscription is better once volume is steady, because the per-call cost is lower and the bill is predictable. The crossover for most UK small businesses is around 40 calls a month.

What hidden charges should I look for in answering service pricing?

Setup fees, minimum monthly spend on pay-as-you-go plans, out-of-hours uplifts, overage rates above your bundle, transfer minutes while a call is patched through, and per-SMS or per-email message delivery charges.
