A Plumber Business Landline That Asks About the Stopcock Before You Have Dried Your Hands
Every plumbing call starts with the same three questions, and you cannot ask them from under a sink with the water off and a customer standing over you. A plumber business landline gives you a local number that rings your mobile on every job, and an AI receptionist that answers in your business name when you cannot, asks where the water is coming from, whether it has been stopped and whether it is near anything electrical, tells the caller the one thing that stops the damage getting worse, and either puts the call through or books it, depending on whether the water is on or off. AI answering is £19.99 a month, no contract.
Water Off or Water On: How Every Plumbing Call Is Sorted
A plumber does not triage by how upset the caller sounds. The question is whether the house still has usable water and whether water is going where it should not. Three questions settle it, and the call lands in one of two bins.
Where is the water coming from?
A tap, a joint under a sink, a ceiling, the boiler, a radiator, the toilet, nowhere at all because there is none. The answer changes the next question.
Has it been stopped?
Does the caller know where the stopcock is, and is it off. If not, the AI tells them where to look, and that turning it off is the first job.
Is it near anything electrical?
A light fitting, a socket, the consumer unit, the boiler. If yes, the switch-off line is given before anything else is written down.
Water off, or going where it should not
- Burst or split pipe, water still runningPut through
- Water through a ceiling or light fittingPut through
- No water at all, neighbours have waterPut through
- Only toilet blocked or will not flush, family in the houseToday
- Cylinder or tank leaking into a cupboardToday
- Frozen pipe, no water to the kitchenToday
- Overflow pouring, not drippingToday
Water on, house usable
- Dripping tap, running toilet, slow drainBooked
- New shower, mixer tap or outside tapBooked
- Washing machine or dishwasher plumbingBooked
- Radiator not heating, valve weepingBooked
- Bathroom or en-suite quoteSurvey
- Water softener, macerator, pumpSurvey
- Landlord maintenance roundQuote
You set the line between the bins. A sole trader on a long bathroom job might want everything in the left bin put through; a firm with two vans might want it booked to whoever is nearest. The AI follows your rule, and a plumber business landline is only as useful as that rule, so it is worth ten minutes.
Three Calls to a Plumber, Answered From Under a Sink
A fictional firm called Riverside Plumbing, three real kinds of caller. Read what each one heard, and what reached the plumber.
Call 1: No water at all, 7:05am, three people trying to get ready
80 seconds. The neighbour question stopped a wasted trip to a street-wide outage, the stopcock question ruled out the free fix, and the blowtorch line may have saved a wall.
Call 2: A letting agent, a shower, and the flat below
80 seconds. Two tenants warned, the light switched off, access sorted and the insurer's report flagged, while you were soldering a joint two miles away.
Call 3: Saturday 6pm, the only toilet in the house, five people
Toilet blocked, plunger tried, nearly overflowed. Bath, shower and outside drain all clear: pan or trap, not the drain.
Weekend callout £95 quoted. Advised: do not flush again.
Call put through to you at 18:02.
50 seconds. "Don't flush it again" was said before anything else, the drain was ruled out so you brought the right kit, and the fee was agreed before the doorstep.
What the AI Says Before You Arrive
A plumber's first words on the phone are usually not "where are you" but "turn the water off". The AI has the same lines, in the same order, for each kind of call. They are yours to edit; these are the ones most plumbers keep.
If the caller cannot find it, the AI asks for the outside stop tap in the pavement and whether a neighbour can help, then moves on; nothing waits on it.
Said before the address is taken. A ceiling fitting that is dripping is the most common version of this call.
Half of these calls are not a plumber's job. The AI finds that out before you drive.
January's call. The second half of the line is the important half.
Rules the drain in or out, which decides what goes in the van.
The difference between a same-day call and a booked one, settled in one sentence.
Every line ends the same way: the address, the fee if it is a callout, and either a transfer to you or a confirmed slot. The customer gets a text repeating the advice, which is useful when they were too flustered to hear it the first time.
Landlords, Letting Agents and the Flat Below
Agent work is the steadiest a plumber gets and the most phone-heavy: two tenants, an agent, a landlord and sometimes an insurer, all needing to know what happened. The AI takes the call the way an agent needs it taken.
Access, taken on the call
Who holds keys, whether the tenant is in, the tenant's number, and whether the agent or the tenant books the time. For a leak into another flat, both flats' access, and which to visit first.
The interim line to the tenants
"Please don't use that shower until the plumber has been" and "keep that light off" are passed to the agent to relay, or texted to the tenants directly if the agent prefers, so the damage stops while you are still on another job.
The report, flagged from the start
If the agent needs a written report for the landlord or an insurer, the AI notes it on the booking so you take the photos and write the two lines on the day rather than being chased for them a week later.
A business landline for plumbers is the number an agent saves as "our plumber", and it is portable: the one on the van and on your Checkatrade page can be ported across and kept.
Wet Hands, Lofts and Soldered Joints
Three reasons a plumber's phone rings out, and what happens to each call now.
The water is off at the customer's house
While you are on a job the customer has no water, and every minute on the phone is a minute they notice. The AI takes the next job in full so the only call you make is the one you have already read the brief for, from the van.
Halfway through a joint
A solder joint, a compression fitting at the back of a cupboard, a push-fit you are holding with one hand. You do not stop. The caller never knows; they hear a receptionist, give their details and get a text.
In a loft with one bar of signal
The number lives in the cloud, so a call you cannot receive is answered by the AI as if you were busy. The brief is waiting when you come down the ladder.
Plumber Business Landline Prices
The AI starts on Lite at £19.99. Monthly, no contract, cancel any time, the same price on a Saturday night as a Tuesday morning. Annual billing takes 25% off.

Questions Plumbers Ask About a Business Landline
What is a plumber business landline?
Your plumbing business's own number, a local 01 or 02 or a national 03, held in the cloud rather than on a wall, so it rings your mobile wherever the van is. No box, no engineer, no line rental, and the number on the van already can be ported onto it. Add AI answering and the calls you cannot take are picked up in your business name: the water-off questions are asked, the stopcock line is given, the fee is stated, and the call is put through to you or booked depending on whether the house has usable water.
What does it do when water is coming through a ceiling?
It gives the two lines that limit the damage before it takes a single detail: turn the water off at the stopcock, and if the water is near a light or a socket, switch off at the fuse box if it is safe to and do not touch the fitting. Then it takes the address, states your callout fee, puts the call through to you and texts you the lot, including what the caller has already switched off.
What does it ask when someone has no water at all?
Whether the neighbours have water. If the street is off, the caller is pointed to the water company's emergency line and you are not sent to an outage. If it is only them, the AI asks them to check the stopcock has not been turned off by accident, whether any work has been done recently, and whether it was freezing overnight. A frozen pipe gets the no-blowtorch line and a priority visit, because a thawed pipe may be a split pipe.
Can it quote my first-hour rate?
Yes. You give it the callout fee, what the first hour includes, the rate after that, the evening and weekend rate and the fact that parts are on top, and it says exactly that on every call that needs a visit. It never invents a number. The confirmation text to the customer repeats it, and on Pro the call is recorded, so "you said the first hour was included" is settled by playing it back.
How does it handle a letting agent's leak into the flat below?
It asks whether the water is coming through now or only when something upstairs is used, whether there is a light fitting involved, who arranges access for both flats and who holds keys, and whether the agent needs a written report for the landlord or insurer. It gives the interim lines, do not use that shower and keep that light off, for the agent to pass on, asks for a photo by email, and books the visit with the upstairs flat first.
I am under a sink with wet hands half the day. How does this help?
That is the whole point. You never touch the phone on a job. The number rings your mobile; if you do not pick up, the AI answers as your receptionist, does the triage and takes the details, and you decide which calls come through to you live and which wait as a text. Most plumbers set burst pipes and ceilings to come through and everything else to be booked, then ring back from the van with the brief already in front of them.
Does it record calls?
Call recording is included on Pro and above, with a transcript in your dashboard. For a plumber the use is the money and the scope: the first-hour rate that was agreed, the parts that were mentioned, and whether the customer was told to turn the water off and when. The recording is there to play back, politely, if it is ever needed.
How much does a plumber business landline cost?
£19.99 a month for a sole trader: that is Lite, with the AI receptionist, 30 AI minutes, two numbers and the text credits the fee confirmations use. Two vans with agent contracts tend to need Pro at £79.99, mostly for the call recording and the 250 AI minutes. The £9.99 Starter plan is the number with divert and voicemail and no AI, which is no help to someone with water coming through a ceiling. Every plan is monthly with no tie-in, and a year paid up front is 25% cheaper.
